Food Poisoning From Religion: False Doctrine (Part II)

This post is Part 2 to my last blog. I discussed the dangers of food poisoning within the church, which is what I called “doctrine poisoning”. No, I don’t mean that the kitchens are poisoned—I mean that sometimes Christians promote false doctrine. I don’t believe that most Christians promote false doctrine with ill intent, or even know that they’re doing it. I’d like to believe that these Christians have also bought into the lies that they’re selling, so they’re selling something they believe in. Some, however, twist the real gospel to gain a bigger following with the world. Some false doctrines are easier to recognize than others. You may recognize…

Waiting On His Promise? Start Living His Character

I do a lot of scrolling through my feeds and through the news, and let me tell you, the diagnosis doesn’t look good. The world is in shambles. I think we can all say that we’re surrounded by suffering. Suffering because of disease, or suffering because of hatred. The air is thick with tension these days. I also hear a lot of people say these days “God told me” or “God promised me”. Sometimes it doesn’t pan out when they expected it. And when that happens, I hear a lot of hurt. I hear a lot of pain. “I really counted on God this time,” they say. “He really let…

You’re Not Being Nice, You’re Tolerating (Part 1)

Sometimes, as soft-hearted people, we’re caught up in conversations that we’re not really invested in. Usually, these are at some kind of function, where we’re meeting people for the first time, or catching up with extra-nosy acquaintances. Maybe you’re secretly glad to not have to socialize right now. Most people find conversation to be a two-sided phenomenon, or at least that’s how it should be. A dialogue. But sometimes, it becomes a monologue. I find that some of you may listen, listen more, and soon enough you’re stuck in a one-sided conversation. “Mhm,” “yeah,” and “oh, I didn’t know that” is the chorus of your anthem. And normally, this wouldn’t…

Christians: Do You Listen Or Give Lip Service?

We’ve all felt ignored. We’ve all bumped into an acquaintance we haven’t spoken to in a while, being asked, “How are you?”. And when you start to answer, you notice that they’re not really paying attention. Their eyes are on the coffee machine behind you, the printer, some other person, the traffic—whatever it is, it’s not on you. You know that they’re not listening. On the other hand, you could very well be the other person. This can happen even in a conversation between good friends, where one person knows the other is prone to being dismissive. The thing is, the one who says, “Oh, don’t worry, it’ll all work…

How To Start And Keep Up Daily Bible Reading

As I’ve mentioned in some other posts, we’re in a pandemic right now. I’ve covered topics addressing where God is in this pandemic, reminding us where our joy should be, and being watchful for signs. The one thing these all hinge on is our listening to God. But really, how does one do that? Well, you can do that in a few ways. Some people find that God speaks to them when they create. Some hear God in music. Others hear God in nature. But the one place where there’s a guaranteed place of encounter with Christ is through His Word: The Holy Bible. Which means… we need to read…

Praying For Signs: Do or Don’t?

I feel like there are opposing opinions within the Christian community when it comes to asking for signs from God. Sometimes a girl needs guidance, and I’ve been both encouraged to and discouraged from asking for specific signs. I’ve been told that God wants us to follow His will for our lives, but that some things are left up to us. If you’re anything like me, you might have asked yourself the following questions: Should I take this career path? Should I date/marry this person? Where should I live? Should I wear white shoes or grey ones? (I kid about that last one). To those who discourage sign-seeking: I understand…
